Matt Shields

Matt Shields has been named the new head wrestling coach at SUNY Ulster. Shields wrestled at SUNY Ulster from 2017-2019 and was a two-time National Qualifier, the first in the program to accomplish this feat. Shields was also the first wrestler to be named Male Athlete of the Year at SUNY Ulster.

"I am excited to give back to the program that I started with," said Shields. "I'm looking to rebuild a program that gave me so much potential. I can't wait to work with dedicated individuals throughout the Section 9 community and get them to the next level."

After Ulster, Shields went on to wrestle at SUNY Oneonta, where he became a Collegiate All-State. He then transferred to Coker University where he was ranked #16 in the country at 174 lbs. Shields became an Academic All-American while at Coker and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

"Matt is our most decorated wrestler at SUNY Ulster," said Director of Athletics Matt Brennie. "Having him come back as our next head coach is important to the continued development of our program."
