Box Score 2 The SUNY Ulster men's soccer team traveled to SUNY Rockland yesterday for their biggest game in quite some time. Ulster was looking to go 3-0 and remain undefeated in conference play after defeating Dutchess and Orange earlier in the season.
Ulster came out and dominated play early creating many quality opportunities highlighted by an impressive free kick by Kelvin Nunez (Fallsburg) that struck the post. Ulster's pressure led to the opening goal in the 23rd minute when Alec Gautier (Rhinebeck) assisted Wes Cruz (Ellenville) who finished with a well struck volley to the far post. Ulster then doubled their lead in the 41st minute when Wes Cruz(Ellenville) earned a penalty kick and Kelvin Nunez (Fallsburg) calmly beat the goalie with a well placed penalty kick. Rockland then answered back just before the half to make the score 2-1 Ulster. Rockland came out very strong in the second half putting the Ulster defense under constant pressure, but a defensive miscue in the 71st minute would lead to another penalty kick for Ulster which Kelvin Nunez (Fallsburg) stepped up and buried to the keepers right for his second goal of the day giving Ulster a 3-1 lead. Rockland continued to fight hard and create opportunities, in the 77th minute they hit the post with a shot from distance and pounced on the loss ball heading it by the Ulster goalie to cut Ulsters lead to 3-2. Ulster then regained control of the game with two goals in two minutes. First Wes Cruz (Ellenville) made an impressive run from just inside midfield, beating 2 defenders then passing ball by the keeper for his second goal of the day. Ulster quickly added their fifth goal of the day in the 88th minute when the hard work of Riley Lake (Ellenville) lead to a great opportunity that was put away by Eduardo Martinez-Gutierrez (NFA). Rockland would close out the scoring with great strike from the top of the box in extra time. With this 5-3 win Ulster remains undefeated in the conference with one conference game left to play. More importantly Ulster clinches their place in the conference championship to be played 10/16. Home field is yet to be determined.
Ulster is now 5-4 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Ulster's next match is against non-conference opponent Albany Pharmacy on Tuesday October 9th at 7pm at Dietz Stadium in Kingston NY.
