The SUNY Ulster Women's Volleyball team opened up it's season at SUNY
Rockland on Sept 11th, 2021. Ulster has struggled visiting Rockland
in recent years as they have put solid teams on the court and it's a
difficult venue to play at. With high expectations from this year's
squad this was an important match.
Rockland was coming off a recent loss to SUNY Dutchess but this was
the first match of the season for Ulster. The Senators showed some
first game jitters as they quickly fell behind 7-1. They played the
rest of the set relatively evenly but dropped it to Rockland 25-20.
The team's confidence rose with each point and each set. With on
court leadership provided by game day captains
Julia Barnett and
Alexandra Maher, the Senators stole a close one 25-23. Adrianna
Decker served out the set with a ton of pressure on her shoulders and
came through big time.
Tied at 1 set a piece the teams continued to battle.Â
Angela Mayer and
Hannah Ortman provided enough offense for Ulster to take the third set
25-23 and give them a 2-1 lead.
The Senators found themselves in trouble in the 4th set, down 23-20,
one unforced could be the difference. Great passing and great setting
from
Emma Ijiogbe got them even though. Once again
Adrianna Decker
came through with some key serves and Ulster snuck out another victory
26-24 to seal the match.
On the day Mayer (18 kills), Ortman (12 kills) and Maher (7 kills) led
the way offensively off the fantastic setting of Ijiogbe (30 assists).
Spectacular serve receive from Barnett, Ortman, Maher and Mayer along
with great team defense was the difference in the match.
Ulster is now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mid Hudson Conference.
They next square off against conference rival SUNY Orange on Tuesday
9/14/21. The match is scheduled for first serve at 7pm at the Senate
Gym on the SUNY Ulster campus.
