Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls in Sub-Regional Final

DUNMORE, PA – Men's Soccer team earned the right to compete in Sub-Regional Championship game Sunday morning after defeating Lackawanna College by a score of 5-1 on Saturday. Senators would take on the #1 seed in the tournament, Massasoit Community College. Senators would fall to Massasoit 2-1, in the final seconds of the first overtime period.

How it Happened:
It was a physical contest with both teams battling from start to finish. Neither side found the goal in the first period. Massasoit would take the lead in the 70th min on a corner kick shot that took a deflection and found the back of the net. Ulster pushed numbers looking to tie the game and defender Randall Ashong found space on the left side crossing to Frank Rodriguez who finished with a nice one touch goal in the side net in the 85th min. The game would head into overtime with the score at 1-1. Both teams looked to create opportunities to score throughout the overtime period but Massasoit found the golden goal winner with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

By the Numbers:
The total number of shots was pretty even between the two teams, with Massasoit holding the advantage 12 to 10 over the Senators. Massasoit also held the advantage for shots on goal 8-4, as well as for corner shots 4-2. Goalkeeper Cody Baker finished with 6 saves for the Senators.

From the Coach:
"A heartbreaking loss in a game that was full of emotion," said head coach Jamal Lis-Simmons.  "Congrats to Massasoit, they were a tough physical team that challenged us in many ways.  A tough way for our season to end, but I'm extremely proud of my team.  They gave everything they had, they put their hearts on the field, but it just wasn't our day. Our guys fought until the last second and have so much to be proud of.  It's not the way we wanted it to end, but we achieved some amazing things this year... including a 10 win season, beating a nationally ranked opponent, and defending our conference title.  Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the conference again and compete in the region, and we did that.  We dominated the conference, won our first regional game and were on the brink of winning a regional title.  We will be back!"
"Big shout to our 6 sophomores ...Jesus Martinez (Newburgh), Modou Badjie (Kingston), Erick Alvarez (Newburgh), Odirlei Thomaz (Newburgh), Edwin Cuesta (Newburgh), Anthony Mendez (Kingston)," continued Lis-Simmons.  "These guys played a major role in the success of our program over the last two days.  They will be missed."
