Mid-Hudson Conference Championship
#7 Ulster CC vs Westchester CC
Ulster - 1 (11-2-2)(4-0-1)
Westchester - 0 (9-2-3)
Champs again! A late winner gives Ulster their 4th title in five years.
After losing this game on this field last year to Westcherter 2-1, the Senators were determined to make it back here and this time finish the job. Ulster controlled a good amount of the possession in the first half, leading to a few good opportunities, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Westchester mostly played on the counter and managed one good opportunity in the first half when a cross was headed to the back post, but
Santiago Saavedra (Pine Bush) came up with the big save to keep the score
0-0. The second half played alot like the first half as Ulster continued to control possession. Then in the 84th minute Pat Fornelos (John Jay) played a through ball to
Nick Thomaz (NFA) down the right sideline. Thomaz outpaced the defender, cut in on his left foot and curled a perfect shot to the far corner giving Ulster a 1-0 lead with six minutes left to play. Westchester tried to push numbers forward, but the Senators were able to see out the game and secure their 4th Mid-Hudson Conference title in the last 5 years.
Santiago Saavedra (Pine Bush) made 3 saves on the day. The win improves Ulster's overall record to 11-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play. The Senators remained #7 in this week's national rankings.
Next up....Region XV Quarterfinal. Ulster is the #2 and will host the #7 seed this Saturday, October 25th at Rondout Valley High School, 1pm kickoff.
